Ronald Frank Asheton, guitarist and songwriter for the punk rock band The Stooges, was born on this day in 1948. He would have been 63 (July 17, 1948 – January 6, 2009).
Here’s some live video from The Stooges reunion in August, 2003. This footage can be found on the Creem Magazine DVD release of “Iggy & The Stooges: Live In Detroit”.
Bonus material included on this DVD is an in-store appearance in New York, where The Stooges, minus Mike Watt, do a very stripped down performance. In fact, Scott Asheton plays on a cardboard box, a suitcase and a bucket instead of his usual drum kit.
I was fortunate to finally see one of my favourite bands live in 2007:
Following the death of Ron Asheton, The Stooges returned to touring later in 2009 with James Williamson, who originally joined The Stooges prior to the 1973 album “Raw Power”. (At that time, Ron Asheton had moved to bass guitar.)
