NASCAR, This Is Goodbye

I was a pretty big fan of NASCAR for 20+ years and watched it faithfully every week. We even got to see a race in California in 2005. In recent years, however, the quality of racing has diminished significantly and I lost interest. The problem lies deeper than what happens on the track. NASCAR has created a boring environment and the entire sport no longer seems to have an identity.

And when you let broadcasters dictate change, you know you are in trouble. I didn’t like the chase format introduced a short time ago but the new stage-based scoring system for this year is really poor. Other sports don’t reward teams for how they perform throughout a game or competition so why does NASCAR believe this will work? So stupid!

I started to watch this years edition of the Daytona 500 but I couldn’t stomach it for very long. Throw in the ‘southern mentality’ (complete with confederate flags), country music branding and the retirement of the sport’s more popular drivers (Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart and now Dale Earnhardt Jr.) and one can understand why ratings continue to slide. Now five months later, I have yet to watch another race.

So NASCAR, this is goodbye. Our relationship is over.
